Key takeaways
- BUC handles uplink translation; LNB handles receive downconversion.
- CIR, burst rate and RF lock describe different properties.
- Commission transmit power with the operator.
Follow the transmit chain
An enterprise VSAT installation links the router to an indoor modem, then to an outdoor radio and antenna. The modem maps traffic into symbols, applies forward error correction and produces an intermediate-frequency signal. A block upconverter (BUC) translates that signal to the assigned uplink band and amplifies it. A feed and reflector shape the radiated beam. The receive path uses the feed and low-noise block downconverter (LNB) to amplify a weak signal and translate it down for the modem.
A BUC power rating is not the same as effective isotropic radiated power. EIRP also includes antenna gain and feed losses. Operating an amplifier too close to saturation can distort a multi-carrier signal and interfere with adjacent services. The network operator must approve power and cross-polarisation alignment before the terminal transmits normal traffic.
Modem and network behaviour
Time-division return links share transmission opportunities among terminals; a dedicated carrier buys a different capacity and operational model. Committed information rate, maximum information rate and contention must be described separately. Adaptive coding and modulation preserves connectivity during degraded signal conditions by reducing spectral efficiency. That means an RF link can remain locked while useful throughput drops.
Acceleration appliances can improve some long-delay TCP behaviour but cannot remove propagation time. End-to-end encrypted traffic may prevent older optimisation methods from inspecting or proxying flows. Test the exact VPN and application configuration proposed for production.
Commissioning sequence
Inspect mount rigidity, cable type, weather sealing and connector condition before powering outdoor units. Verify modem frequency plans, reference requirements, polarisation, voltage and current against the actual equipment manual. Record clear-sky receive levels and error counters after provider-assisted commissioning. Save a configuration export and photographs of cable labels for remote support.
Fault isolation
If the modem has no receive lock, start with pointing, LNB power and cable continuity. If lock is healthy but transmit registration fails, investigate provisioning and return-path settings with the operator. If registration succeeds but users report slowness, inspect queueing and purchased capacity. Avoid turning up RF power as a generic fix: it can mask the cause and breach approved operating limits.
From concept to acceptance
Worked design exercise
Consider a terminal that registers successfully but delivers only 2 Mbps when users expect a 20 Mbps plan. First compare the contract's committed and burst rates. Next inspect whether adaptive coding has reduced capacity, whether the router is shaping to an old profile, and whether a VPN CPU is saturated. The presence of receive lock rules out some faults but does not prove adequate capacity.
An acceptance record should contain clear-sky RF measurements, the approved transmit configuration, successful operator commissioning, LAN handoff details and a load test through the production firewall. These observations create a baseline that remote support can actually use.
Regional compliance & specification note
Australia / ACMA. use the authorised frequency, emission and power configuration. Installation work may also require appropriately registered cabling personnel.
Germany / BNetzA. confirm site and antenna parameters against the frequency assignment or applicable general assignment before commissioning.
These are procurement checks, not a determination that a particular installation is authorised. Confirm the current equipment, service, site and operating mode with the relevant authority and provider.
